Fewer fire deaths last year

Four people died in fires last year, half of the fire deaths in 2014.

These figures were revealed on Thursday (Feb 18) by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) during the release of their annual statistics.

The number of emergency medical services calls continued to rise with 165,853 calls, or more than 450 per day, being received.

This is 6.5 per cent more calls received compared with 2014.

The SCDF said one of the reasons for this is the country's ageing population with the number of calls involving the elderly (aged 65 and above) increasing from 57,931 calls in 2014 to 62,051 calls last year.

Fires in residential premises went up marginally by 10 cases to 2,898.

Two areas of concern were rubbish fires (1,546 cases) and those caused by unattended cooking (396 cases) which both saw increases.
