Social worker Sudha Nair was named Her World Woman Of The Year 2016 last night - the first social worker to be chosen, marking a milestone for the sector.

The 58-year-old is executive director of Promoting Alternatives to Family Violence (Pave), which holds the distinction of being Singapore's first family violence specialist centre, said a statement from SPH Magazines, which publishes Her World.

Dr Nair, who is also an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore, started her social work career at Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre (then called the Ang Mo Kio Social Service Centre) in 1986.

She was named the inaugural winner of the Outstanding Social Worker Award in 1998, and later became the driving force behind the establishment of Pave.

Ms Jenny Tay, 30-year-old managing director of Direct Funeral Services, was named Her World Young Woman Achiever 2016.

She introduced several innovations to her company - and the industry here - including implementing a night watch service so mourning families do not have to stay overnight at the wake venue.
