Woman, 53, knocked down by van in Hougang
School canteen hawker Teng Soo Ngoh loved going for early morning walks and would leave her home in Block 698A, Hougang Street 52, at 4am every day.
But the 53-year-old did not return home after one such walk yesterday.
She was killed in an accident involving a van at about 4.50am on the street where she lived.
The accident happened in front of Block 699.
Witnesses said Madam Teng was crossing the road when she was hit by the van, which was making a right turn.
The New Paper understands that Madam Teng's husband had gone out to look for her after discovering at 7am that she still had returned from her walk.
Unable to conceal his grief, he was heard crying and shouting at the scene of the accident and saying: "I told her not to go for her morning walks."
A woman in her 20s, who is believed to be Madam Teng's daughter, was also heard at the scene saying: "I had promised to take her to Taiwan."
She also asked to see who the driver of the van was.
A ground-floor resident of Block 699, who wanted to be known only as Ms SJ Pek, said she was woken up by flashing lights from the police cars and ambulance that had arrived.
"I didn't hear the accident - it happened too early," she added.
Another resident, who wanted to be known only as Mr HK Wong, said he came across the accident when he left his flat at about 7am.
"I thought the van had stopped at an awkward angle along the road and the victim was about 5m away from it.
"Police had cordoned off the road opposite (Montfort Junior School). It was not passable," he said.
Police said they received a call at 4.55am informing them of an accident involving a van and a pedestrian.
DANGEROUS
A spokesman said the pedestrian, a 53-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Resident Thana Selvan, 40, described the spot as dangerous.
"It's a place where students get dropped off and anyone of them can get hit by oncoming vehicles.
"I have been hit by cars on two separate occasions (at that spot). Learning about this accident, I regret not making any report then," he said.
Police said the van driver, 54, was arrested at the scene of the accident for causing death by negligent act.
If found guilty, he could be jailed for up to two years and fined or both.
