Some companies are offering new staff a paid vacation... before they start work
Imagine landing an awesome new job. Then the boss tells you: "Okay, take two weeks of paid vacation before you start."
Sounds unbelievable, right?
But it's true. Jason Freedman, co-founder and CEO of 42 floors, a San Francisco-based commercial real estate search engine, did just that.
Freedman decided on the perk after an applicant for a job at the company was left frustrated and exhausted at their previous job.
So he suggested the new hire take a couple of weeks off.
Freedman said: "We called it a pre-cation. It was only a couple of weeks, but he just came in so refreshed and energised, it was amazing."
Since then, he has been offering pre-cations to all new hires. "The day they get their offer letter, it's kind of like Christmas morning, in that they have a new job and they've already thought through the vacation they're about to go on."
Time to recharge
Another company, Atlassian, an enterprise software company, offers the same thing. In fact, they also give their employees unlimited vacation days.
Every new employee gets a travel voucher. They're encouraged to take a trip before they start work.
The company's chief people officer said: "We want people to bring their best every day, and we want them here for the long haul.
"Changing jobs is an important shift and we want to give people time to recharge, spend some time with family. Because once you start a new job, you kind of jump all in."
Let's hope some Singaporean companies start this policy too!
