SOS: They need professional help
People who face overwhelming stress may engage in various coping strategies, like going to mediums, based on their cultural and religious affiliations or beliefs.
But Samaritans of Singapore executive director Christine Wong said that what they require is professional help.
Ms Wong told The New Paper that sometimes when people are in debt, they may feel overwhelmed and may not know how to cope.
There may also be feelings of shame, hopelessness and helplessness.
Ms Wong stressed that it is important that they seek help from family and friends, or from professionals in the field.
There are several community resources that can help them with debt-related issues. (See Helplines.)
"For people with mental health issues, they need professional help immediately from individuals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and social workers," she said.
