By the end of next year, commuters waiting for trains at the platforms of 32 MRT stations here will enjoy free WiFi service to check their e-mails, surf the web or connect to social media.

This will include all stations on the North East Line (NEL), and 12 others - Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Bukit Batok, Buona Vista, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi, Eunos, Jurong East, Khatib, Paya Lebar, Sembawang and Yishun.

Currently, free WiFi access is available at City Hall, Orchard and Raffles Place and selected platforms at Bishan, Dhoby Ghaut and Outram Park stations, said the Land Transport Authority in an update yesterday on the MRT network.

Updates on upgrading

LTA also gave updates on its network expansion and upgrading works.

These include:

- The addition of more trains to existing lines every year from 2015 to 2019

- Upgrading works at three existing stations - Clementi, Commonwealth and Queenstown - which are expected to be completed by mid-2015

- New rail lines and stations that are being built. The LTA is adding four more stations on the East-West Line (EWL) and one more station on the North-South Line (NSL).

Here's what the expanded network will look like.
