TWO THEORIES ON HOW THE CRASH HAPPENED
At 6.12am on Dec 28, flight QZ8051 requests permission to deviate from its usual route to avoid bad weather and to bring the plane from 32,000 ft to 38,000 ft.
Two minutes later, Jakarta responds by asking QZ8051 to go left by about nine miles (11km) and to climb to 34,000 ft, but there is no reply from the plane. It disappears at 6.18am.
A leaked image shows QZ8501 at 36,300ft and climbing at 353 knots.
Two veteran pilots say that the image points to the aircraft climbing suddenly, then losing speed. This can result in the aircraft stalling before falling into the sea.
An alternative theory is that the plane made an emergency water landing, after which it was swamped by the seas (see report below).
