UK student gains loads of weight, finds out she has been sleep-eating

A university student, who could not fathom how she had gone up three dress sizes in a year, discovered she had been sleep-eating.

Miss Katie Archibald, 20, would often wake up to find food missing from the fridge.

It was only after a trip to the doctor that the UK student realised she had a sleep-eating disorder caused by the medication she had been taking for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Metro quoted her as saying: "I had absolutely no idea why I was putting on weight.

"And I used to get in massive rows with my flatmates about all this food that was going missing – I was adamant I hadn’t eaten anything.

"It was only when I woke up one morning surrounded by chocolate bar wrappers that I realised I must have been sleep-eating."

Miss Archibald, who is studying philosophy and world religion at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, went from a UK size 10 to a size 16 in her first year.

Four portions of spaghetti in a night

The third-year student has since stop taking the medication. But the sleep-eating has not stopped.

Miss Archibald thinks she sleep-eats about three nights a week, reported Mail Online.

One night, she managed to eat four portions of spaghetti and make toast. Another night, she ate an entire wheel of cheddar cheese.

"It isn’t really seen as an eating disorder, apparently it’s more of a parasomnia," Mail Online quoted her as saying.

"Basically, my body is conditioned to be hungry in the night and want food – even if I don’t."
