Think looks don't matter in an arranged marriage? Think again.

A 23-year-old man in India fled his home soon after his engagement ceremony because he did not like the looks of his 19-year-old wife-to-be.

The father of the bride told Deccan Chronicle: "The engagement was on Nov 15. Soon after the engagement his cell phone remained switched off continuously for three days.

"His mother convinced us that he might have gone to meet his sister, who is in Tamil Nadu. Soon the wedding day approached, but the whereabouts of the groom was still unknown."

He said he later learnt the groom had run away because he was not satisfied with his daughter's looks.

The family has made a police report, accusing the man of absconding with Rs75,000 (S$1,600) in dowry, a gold ring, a watch and his wedding attire.

The bride has since declared that she will not marry the man even if changes his mind, Makkal Osai reported.

Police are investigating the case and searching for the man.
