UPDATE Passenger plane crashes in Tehran

This article is more than 12 months old

A small passenger plane carrying more than 40 passengers crashed in a residential area after taking off from Tehran's Mehrabad airport on Sunday morning, reported Iran's official IRNA news agency.

At least 38 people were killed instantly, state media reported. About 10 were injured and sent to hospital.

It is not known if anyone on the ground was injured.

The plane was bound for Tabas in northeastern Iran and crashed into a residential block.

It was reported that an engine shutdown had caused the crash.

International sanctions

Iran's aviation sector has suffered repeated crashes.

Iranian politicans have blamed the mishaps on international sanctions, which restrict carriers from buying new aircraft.

Parts are sometimes imported on the black market, said aviation sources.
