An unusual case made headlines last week: A Seattle woman is accused of raping her neighbor as he slept.

The man, 31, realised what was happening when he woke up.

Court papers showed she held him down when he demanded that she move and told him to be quiet. She continued until he eventually worked his way free and pushed her out of his apartment.

Police later identified the alleged rapist as 26-year-old Chantae Gilman, a mother of four.

The incident took place on June 16, 2013 after a birthday party, NY Daily News reported.

Both the victim and aggressor are strangers.

Alleged rapist is mother and "drug user"

Gilman is a mother of four who is eight months pregnant with her fifth child, said Elwin Hartfield, a friend who answered the door at her last known address in Seattle.

She had been treated for mental health issues and drug abuse in the past.

The victim told investigators he did not know Gilman, beyond recognising her as "a drug user in the area."

Gilman told police she didn't remember the incident. She suffers from a mental illness and bipolar disorder.

Detective Drew Fowler from the Seattle Police Department said:

"From a statistical standpoint, yes, it is atypical to have a female aggressor.

But we work to hold all people responsible for their actions."

Gilman will be charged next Monday (Sept 22).
