The topic of police brutality in America has made headlines once again.

A disturbing video recording shows a New York police office violently handling a woman who is clearly pregnant.

The clip, posted on Tuesday (Sept 23) has gone viral.

A police officer was seen grabbing Sandra Amezquite's arm. The 43-year-old is five months pregnant. He then throws her onto the pavement.

"You would think the police would respect a woman that is pregnant," said Amezquita.

She suffered vaginal bleeding after the incident - and her belly and arm are still bruised.

"I was afraid something happened to my baby. I am still afraid that something is wrong," she said as she complained about persistent abdominal pain.

Her husband Ronel Lemos was also at the scene.

He said: "The first thing I thought was, they killed my baby and they're going to kill my wife."

Lemos was subsequently arrested for assaulting a police officer while Amezquita was given a summons for disorderly conduct.

The parents said they were responding to their son's cries as cops arrested him.

Photos of their son Jhohan showed him looking bruised and swollen.

The officer is currently under investigation by the New York Police Department (NYPD) internal affairs.
