Workers sleep at M'sia immigration after a day's work in S'pore
Some Malaysians who work in Singapore have been calling the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex their home.
After their work is done for the day, the group of hundred odd workers make their way back across the Causeway.
But instead of leaving the area after clearing customs, these factory workers and cleaners hunker down and prepare to get a good night's rest.
Despite having been repeatedly chased away by Malaysian authorities, the workers continue to return to the complex and the adjoining building, JB Sentral.
They use the public toilets to wash up and sleep on benches and chairs.
JB Sentral has air-conditioning and, because some eateries there operate round-the-clock, workers do not have trouble finding food.
The complex, which opened in 2008, is used by an estimated 300,000 commuters daily.
The Star approached one such worker, but she claimed she was just waiting for her passport to be issued.
“I do not live here. I am just waiting for my documents to be sorted,” she said before heading to a corner of the complex where her belongings, including a transistor radio, slippers, talcum powder and toiletries, were kept in a pile.
