Girl's arm gets stuck in China shopping mall escalator
Another child has gotten into an escalator accident, this time at a shopping mall in Chongqing.
The three-year-old is the latest casualty in a series of escalator-related mishaps in China recently.
The girl tripped and fell at about 4pm on Tuesday (Sept 15) while travelling with her grandmother.
Closed circuit TV footage showed that her hands and arms were caught in a gap at the side of the machine. Shopping mall staff heard her cries and pushed a button to stop the escalator, the South China Morning Post said.
But they were unable to pry open a gap big enough to free the girl, so the emergency services were called in, website Shanghaiist said.
Firefighters took about 40 minutes to free her arm. She suffered minor injuries, news website Qq.com reported.
Deadly accident
Accidents involving escalators across the country have kept mall-goers on high alert.
A 30-year-old woman was killed at a shopping centre in Jingzhou in central China in July after an escalator plate gave way under her feet.
She managed to throw her two-year-old son to safety before she fell.
Workers retrieved the woman's body after four hours. It is believed that loose screws on the footplate caused the accident.
On Sunday (Sept 13), another escalator malfunctioned in the same way.
But luckily, the woman heard the metal plate collapse and ran down the rest of the escalator while staff stopped it.
