Heroic boy dies saving sister in hit-and-run
An 11-year-old boy in the United States died after he pushed his little sister out of the way of a car which was barrelling into them.
The siblings were waiting for the school bus near their home in South Carolina when La'Darious Wylie saw the car speeding towards them last Tuesday, reported NY Daily News.
He pushed his sister Sha'Vonta, seven, to safety while he took the brunt of the collision.
The hit-and-run driver, Michelle Johnson, 57, then fled the scene without calling for help.
"He knew to look out for her," his devastated mum Elizabeth McCrorey said.
She said that her daughter told the police what happened and that by the time she was able to get up, the car was gone.
La'Darious died at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte the next day and his mother donated his organs so that other children might survive injury or illness.
He was remembered as a hero when he was laid to rest on Thursday (Nov 5).
"He saved his sister, and he ended up being the one that's where he is now," aunt Felicia Mobley told local TV station WBTV.
Johnson was later charged with hit-and-run resulting in death.
She was released after posting a US$25,000 (S$35,000) bond.
La'Darious' heroic actions have prompted some residents to push for renaming the city's Brooklyn Park - just down the street from where La'Darious died and where he played all his life - in his name.
Chester County Supervisor Shane Stuart said that he has heard of the idea of naming the park for La'Darious and said it would be "fitting."
"It would be an honourable way to remember him," Mr Stuart said.
