M'sian actress' car catches fire on highway

This article is more than 12 months old

It was a close shave for Malaysian actress Vanidah Imran, whose Mini Cooper caught fire on Wednesday (June 17) morning on her way home from filming.

The 41-year-old was driving on the North-South Highway between Serdang and the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza from Malacca at about 3am when a truck driver caught her attention.

“(He) alerted me when he noticed that my engine was burning. I soon saw it, and drove to the side of the road before quickly getting out,” she told the New Straits Times.

Vanidah also tried not to panic.

Firemen arrived at the scene to put out the fire and Vanidah as well as her husband, actor Rashidi Ishak, later made a police report.

The couple had won the Mini Cooper as part of celebrity dance competition Sehati Berdansa in 2007.

Vanidah, who hosted Malaysian female lifestyle TV programme Nona in 2011, was puzzled over the incident because the car had always been in “tip-top condition”.

It was completely burnt and investigations are still ongoing, but she claimed there is a possibility of a wiring problem that fanned a small flame into a big fire, or a possible leak.

But she’s thankful to escape unharmed — she lost only a few items of clothing that had been placed in the backseat.

“It’s sad to see our prized car go so suddenly, and its end has come as a shocking start for our Ramadan this year. But most importantly, I’m glad I’m safe and sound, and that’s what matters most to our family,” she told NST.

“God gave me one more chance to live,” she told Malaysia’s Berita Harian.
