US woman fired on her first day of work because of Facebook post

This article is more than 12 months old

Kaitlyn Walls wasn't looking forward to her first day of work at a childcare centre.

The 27-year-old American wrote on Facebook just hours before her shift was due to begin: "I start my new job today, but I absolutely hate working at daycare."

She added: "I just really hate being around a lot of kids."

The online community didn't take her comments too well. Nor did her employer.

She was barraged with insults ranging from "dumb" to a comparison to the "bubonic plague", reported Mirror.

News of the post quickly spread in The Colony, a city in Texas, and it soon reached the ears of her new employer, reported Metro.

Before she even set foot in the childcare centre, she was fired.

'A big mistake'

Ms Walls has since been regretting putting up the post.

The mother-of-one wrote on Facebook: "Oh man I made a big mistake. I'm so sad. I feel like a failure here looking at my daughter crying because I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to find a job because of my own stupidity."

She told CBS she needed the job badly as she is "a single mum trying to get out on my own".

Ms Walls, who is now hunting for another job, said she has learnt her lesson, reported Mail Online.

"I’m not going to post anything like it ever. No matter how I feel," she said.
