A Paris airport worker was arrested after he pocketed 20,000 euros (S$30,750) dropped by a Moroccan diplomat to the United Nations, police said.

The ambassador was leaving Air France's VIP lounge at Charles De Gaulle airport and heading for a flight to New York on Wednesday (Dec 23) when two mobile phones fell from his bag and he realised the money was missing, AFP reported.

He retraced his steps, but could not find the money and he left the airport police to continue the search while he boarded the plane.

Video surveillance showed a temporary employee of the airport picking up the money. He was arrested at his home on Wednesday night.

A police source said that about half the money had been recovered. It was not clear what charges the man might face.

Local authorities said he had lost his job at the airport.
