She had picked up a man on Wednesday who was bleeding from the head along an expressway in Penang.

The man was a victim in a horrific shooting in which a bodyguard killed his boss, Datuk Ong Teik Kwong, and two others.

He also injured others. The bodyguard and another man involved have been arrested.

According to the woman who lodged a police report on Thursday, she was driving along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway when she noticed a man bleeding from the head and face.

Thinking it was a traffic accident, she stopped and offered to take him to hospital, The Star reported.

The man asked her if he could use her phone to contact his family, she said in her report.

She then overheard him saying "the bodyguard had gone mad" and "tailo" (boss in Cantonese) was dead.

She also heard him say the bodyguard had hit him on the head with his gun.

The man then called another person and said his belongings were in the boss' car.

When she heard this, the witness said she dropped the man off at a petrol station out of fear.

State police chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the incident was triggered when Mr Ong discovered that his driver was intoxicated and unable to drive.

He decided to take over from the driver while they were on the expressway, said the New Straits Times.

This led to an argument with the bodyguard who pulled out his weapon and opened fire, first aiming at Mr Ong and then shooting randomly, said the report.

Mr Ong was shot dead first, while subsequent shots killed or injured nearby motorists, the report said.

The other victims killed are Mr Senthil Murugiah, 38, and Mr Choi Hon Ming, 32.

Five others were injured, including a 28-year-old man who was hit by a stray bullet in his shoulder while riding his motorcycle.

He is reported to be in stable condition.
