Tech giant Intel has set a world record with a stunning aerial light display featuring 100 quadcopter drones synchronised with a live orchestra.

The whimsical performance took place in Tornesch, Germany in November and was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously.

Set to the tune of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, the drones lit up the airspace with a spectacular array of blinking lights while flying about and changing formation in sync with music.

The display culminated with the flying machines spelling out Intel in the sky, prompting rapturous applause and cheering from the spellbound audience.

Footage of the display was only made public by Intel at the recently-concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
