Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 88, is being treated for "water on the brain" and has had the excess fluid drained, the palace said.
The Royal Household Bureau said in a statement that doctors adjusted a tube used to drain excess fluid after they noticed facial twitching.
"It was detected that his facial muscles had irregular movements, and the doctors conducted a computer x-ray and found there was an irregular surplus of fluid in the backbone and brain," the statement said.
Last Saturday, the palace said the king was treated with antibiotics for a lung infection and knee inflammation.

The White House was placed on lockdown for more than an hour on Friday after a man brandished a weapon nearby and was shot. Heavily armed Secret Service agents were deployed around the building.
President Barack Obama was not on the premises when the incident took place around 3.10pm (3.10am yesterday, Singapore time).
The Secret Service reported an “adult male subject, carrying a firearm, approached an outer perimeter checkpoint accessible to the general public,” according to spokesman Robert Hoback.
The spokesman said the man refused to comply when officers asked him to stop and drop the firearm. He was then shot, wounded and taken into custody.

The Plant-A-Coral initiative launched by the National Parks Board (NParks) yesterday offers a chance to contribute to Singapore’s marine biodiversity.
For every $200 donation, NParks will plant a small coral fragment in itsnursery, grow it to a suitable size and transplant it onto a reef at the Sisters’ Island Marine Park.
Donors will be provided with photo updates on the coral and will be given the chance to go on an intertidal walk at the park.
NParks also unveiled further plans for the two Sisters’ Islands, including building the country’s first turtle hatchery and other facilities such as forest trails and intertidal pools.
An exhaust duct on the rooftop of Rivervale Plaza in Sengkang caught fire yesterday morning.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was informed at 7.13am and sent two fire engines, two Red Rhinos, four support vehicles and an ambulance. The fire was put out with two water jets within 20 minutes.
The building was evacuated before help arrived. No one was injured.
The exhaust duct is believed to be linked to coffee shops in the mall.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. It happened just a day after Parkway Parade reopened following a fire. It had broken out at a clothing store on level two of the Marine Parade mall last Sunday night.
