Mexico go through to last 16 with solid display
Three second-half goals from Mexico on Tuesday (June 24) ensured that they qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup.
35-year-old Rafael Marquez opened the scoring for Mexico when he powered home a header in the 72nd minute.
Andrés Guardado then rounded off a swift counter-attack for the Mexicans in the 75th minute to double Mexico's advantage.
Another substitute, Javier Hernandez then added their third in the 82nd minute when he struck with a close range header.
It was the striker’s first international goal since last year’s Confederations Cup and capped an all-round performance in which his energy, clever movement and precise hold-up play proved the difference in a previously cagey clash.
“We needed someone who would revolutionise (our game),” Mexico’s jubilant coach Miguel Herrera told reporters.
“Javier did a very good job, he came in held the ball and did very well and even got a goal which was great...
“We know he gives everything and we are very happy with his attitude today and all the time.”
Croatia grabbed a consolation goal in the 87th minute but it was too little too late.
They had gone into the match needing to win to qualify, but their loss against a spirited Mexican side meant that the join Cameroon at the departing lounge at the airport.
As the second placed team in Group B, they will face Netherlands in the round of 16 on June 30.
