DEFENDER Carlos Marchena struck a dramatic equaliser in the seventh minute of injury time to allow Spain to scramble a 1-1 home draw with Bosnia in a World Cup Group Seven qualifier on Wednesday.

Spain looked destined for only their second home defeat in a Qualifier in 14 years when an opportunist strike from Zvjezdan Misimovic gave the visitors a shock lead shortly before the break.

The goal came completely out of the blue as Spain had dominated throughout, but their lack of firepower up front was cruelly exposed by their opponents who gave them a lesson in finishing by scoring in practically their only attack of the game.

The home side missed a hatful of chances to equalise before Bosnia suffered a double setback when first substitute Nedim Halilovic and then midfielder Mirsad Beslija were sent off in the dying minutes.

Spain responded by throwing everyone forward into the Bosnia area and eventually got their reward when Marchena snapped home on the turn from close range in the final move of the game.

The point was enough to put Spain top of the group, a point ahead of Serbia and Montenegro, but Luis Aragones's side have played a game more.

'We were too anxious in front of goal,' said Aragones. 'The fighting spirit of the team was admirable, but we were very disorganised out there and I didn't like that.

'They managed one attack, scored from it and then created a lot of problems for us with their organised defensive play.' - Reuters.
