I WOULD like to comment on the new lines and arrows colours on the MRT platforms. Although the previous yellow 'safety' lines and arrows have been changed to red and green ones, it may not increase the effectiveness of sending the message that people should let commuters alight before boarding the train. If people can disrespect the yellow line, the new red and green lines would serve no purpose, too. To most, it's just a line, nothing more. Nowadays, people no longer exercise social responsibility when using public transport. They just care for themselves. Those boarding the train can sometimes be selfish and rude, and be inconsiderate to alighting passengers. Again, it's the 'kiasu' syndrome of Singaporeans acting up. Some commuters also 'cut queue' when the train arrives. They try ways and means to squeeze through, to get to the front, and stand right in front of the door. What are the safety lines and arrows on the platform for then? It's useless when people do not give a hoot about them. Recently, I saw a mother and her two children standing right in the middle of the passageway meant for commuters to alight. Isn't she sending the wrong message to her children about courtesy while taking the MRT? I hope that the SMRT will come up with a better solution to deal with the problem of irresponsible and inconsiderate commuters taking the MRT. FROM READER CHEONG YUAN TING
