Mexican Gal a spitting image of her dam

Trainer Laurie Laxon's assistant trainer Shane Ellis drew the similarities between Mexican Gal and her dam Mexican Rose after the former's debut win last night.

"The moment I saw her, I thought she was the spitting image of her mom," said Ellis.

"In fact, as a filly, she's even stronger in terms of bulk and confirmation than her mom.

"She's also a bit of a handful like her mom, who failed her first barrier trial. She passed hers but they have similar characteristics.

"We were a bit sceptical initially though as the first foal is normally not as good as the mother."
