Sprints and thrills this weekend

Speed is the name of the game at the Prudential Swim Stars meet starting on Friday.

No heats, no qualifiers, just races - with a deliberate focus on sprints.

Swim Stars co-founder Stephan Caron, who won Olympic bronze medals in the 100m freestyle in 1988 and 1992, said: "People love watching sprints. Swimming can be a bit boring if it goes on for too long, so we want to make it exciting, lively. So no heats, just finals."

Forty international swim stars are invited to take part in the meet, of which there are 12 Olympic winners and 21 world champions.

Outreach programmes lined up will see some of these international swim stars conduct clinics at selected schools before taking part in a swim-off against the kids at the OCBC Aquatic Centre this weekend.
