Sundown Marathon to include Penang, Taipei
Night race will go to Penang and Taiwan before Singapore stop in March next year
In the third edition of the race in 2010, 19,000 participants descended on the start and end point at Changi Exhibition Centre, causing traffic jams even.
The OSIM Sundown Marathon has been a hit with runners, and the 10th edition next year will see the country's first night race expanded to included stops in Malaysia and Taiwan.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Singapore Sports Institute (SSI), yesterday, Adrian Mok, managing director of HiVelocity, the race organisers, said: "It is very timely that we have now found the ideal locations (for the expansion).
"We will also be marking a milestone with the launch of our first overseas event in Penang and Taipei."
The night marathon will be taking place in Bayan Lepas' Queensbay Mall in Penang on Dec 17, with three categories, namely the 5km, 10km and 21.1km categories.
The race will be held around the shopping mall area, certain unfamiliar streets as well as around a highway which connects to the shopping mall.
In Taipei, the marathon will take place in the Dajia Riverside Park on Jan 14, allowing participants to enjoy a scenic view while running either a 5km, 10km, 23km or the full 42km race.
Participants will also be able to make contact with the world-famous skyscraper, the Taipei 101, during their run.
Looking at future plans, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of OSIM International, Ron Sim, revealed they hoped to reach Hong Kong and China.
He said: "I think there's more to come. In time, I believe the Sundown Marathon in Singapore can have 50,000 participants within a year.
"What is important is that OSIM is a Singaporean brand and we would love to bring the brand overseas, too.
"I am hoping we will be able to bring this to Hong Kong and China soon (because) OSIM has been in Taiwan for 29 years, Hong Kong for 30 years, China for 23 years and Malaysia for 25 years.
"There's enough history, culture, enough fans and customers in all of these countries already. We are very pleased to support this event."
- The 10th edition of the Singapore race will be held on March 25, 2017, at the F1 Pit Building. There are seven race categories, ranging from a 5km fun run (for kids and youth), a 10km run, a half-marathon to the full marathon. Those interested can sign up at www.sundownmarathon.com/singapore.
