Winx wins Australia's Cox Plate in track record

Favourite WINX easily won the Cox Plate - Australia's premier weight-for-age race - at the Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne on Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained mare (7-2 fav) won by four and three-quarter lengths from Criterion (5-1) and Irish horse Highland Reel (7-1).

Winx lowered Might And Power's track record set in his 1998 Cox Plate win, with the mare covering the 2,040m in 2min 02.98sec.

Highland Reel finished best of the international contingent but was unable to give trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore back-to-back wins in the weight-for-age race.

Highland Reel was one of three European invitees and finished third.

The O'Brien-trained Adelaide became the first Northern Hemisphere-trained horse to win the Cox Plate last year. -AFP.
