Heartbreak for Slingers
HK EASTERN LONG LIONS | SINGAPORE SLINGERS |
97 | 95 |
Big centre Justin Howard amassed 39 points and 27 rebounds, Xavier Alexander produced 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Asean Basketball League local MVP Wong Wei Long also chipped in with 24 points for the Singapore Slingers.
But, when it mattered most, the Slingers' big guns took their eyes off the ball and allowed Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions to go on a 13-0 run with just 1:44 left in the fourth quarter and tie 90-90 to take the game into overtime.
Yet more turnovers - the Slingers had an astonishing 28 to Eastern's 12 - meant the momentum had shifted to the hosts in the extra five minutes at the Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai last night.
Patrick Sullivan was left unmarked in the paint to pick up Marcus Elliott's air ball to nail the winner as Eastern won 97-95 to remain unbeaten (3-0) and inflict a first defeat on the Slingers this season.
The Slingers' next game is on Dec 18, when they host the Alab Pilipinas. - DAVID LEE
