Angel di Maria pens open letter to Man United fans

Angel Di Maria penned an open letter to fans of Manchester United after finalising his move to French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The letter was published on the website of Spanish journalist Guillem Balague on Thursday (Aug 7).

In the note, he thanked Manchester United and the fans for the support he received during the year he was at the club.

I write this note to thank all the Manchester United family for the great support received during the year I’ve been part of this Club.

When Manchester United chose me as part of their team I felt extremely honoured because I knew what this Club means and how it trusted me.

He also acknowledged that his time at Manchester United was disappointing but that it was part and parcel of a footballer's career.

He said he tried his best but some things were out of his control.

I can guarantee you it was not for trying. I did my best but football is not like maths: often a lot of things out of our control affect the way we feel and the way things turn out.

I am sorry it did not work out as I would have wished in this amazing huge club. - Angel Di Maria.

The 27-year-old Argentine moved to the English club last summer from Real Madrid for a British record fee of £60 million (S$123 million).

While he started his Manchester United career brightly, scoring three goals in his first four games, he suffered a two-month injury layoff and failed to score again in the league, reported Reuters.

Towards the end of the season he was regularly left out by manager Louis Van Gaal and eventually moved to the French club for £44 million.

In February this year, there was an attempted robbery at his home, forcing him and his family to move into a hotel.

Manchester United provided his family with round-the-clock security, reported The Telegraph.

Di Maria was unveiled as a PSG player on Thursday (Aug 6).
