Are you serious, Arsene? Wenger claims Arsenal can still catch Chelsea
In this world, there are optimists, realists and pessimists. And then, there's Arsene Wenger.
While football managers of top clubs are expected to be strong characters who will not accept defeat as an answer (take some notes, Mr Moyes), there are times when you simply have to adopt a realistic point of view - something the under-fire Arsenal boss clearly isn't willing to do right now.
Despite his Arsenal side languishing 13 points behind runaway English Premier League leaders Chelsea, Wenger thinks the Gunners can still catch their London rivals and actually win the title.
The Frenchman said: "We have a big competition in England, we have to accept that. The Premier League level goes always up and this season Chelsea have started very well.
"They will be difficult to catch, but everybody will fight to come back on them.
"After 13 or 14 games, you cannot say that the title race is over. You cannot say that is not catchable."
Full marks for eternal optimism, Arsene.
Special squad
Even if he doesn't bring home the EPL title this season, Wenger believes he will be able to deliver one with squad which he describes as capable of "something special" before his current contract expires.
When asked if he could win a title in his current three-year deal which expires in 2017, he said: "Of course. We have not started very well, but we never had the squad together since the start of the season.
"It was a post World Cup start typically. I think we have what is requested to do it.
"We have to fight like mad now to come back as much as possible to show that we can compete in every single game."
Good luck, Arsenal fans. May the odds ever be in your favour...
