Blatter: Qatar World Cup a mistake
Fifa supremo Sepp Blatter has admitted that awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a mistake.
Football's world-governing body drew flak when the Gulf nation was announced as the host nation for the game's biggest tournament back in December 2010.
While the organisation has refused to back down on the decision, Fifa president Blatter told Swiss TV channel RTS that it had made a mistake due to the country's unbearable summer heat.
He said: "Of course, it was a mistake. You know, one makes a lot of mistakes in life.
"The technical report indicated clearly that it was too hot in summer, but despite that the executive committee decided, with quite a big majority, that the tournament would be in Qatar."
Blatter also denied that Qatar had "bought" the right to host the World Cup.
Despite the admission, Fifa has since emerged to deny that Qatar are unfit to host the tournament and that Blatter had "at no stage questioned Qatar as the host of the 2022 Fifa World Cup".
