Capital One Cup: Premier League trio progress

Manchester City booked their place in the Capital One Cup semi-finals, but the 4-1 scoreline flattered them somewhat against Sky Bet Championship side Hull.

An early goal from Manchester City's Wilfried Bony should have been the platform for a comfortable win for the current premier league leaders, but it was not until a strike from 19-year-old substitute Kelechi Iheanacho and a Kevin De Bruyne brace in the last 10 minutes that the match was wrapped up.

Hull left-back Andrew Robertson managed to score a late consolation but, in truth, three-time winners City were not really stretched at any point, with their superior fitness taking effect in the latter stages.

Everton

Meanwhile, Everton's Gerard Deulofeu turned in a master-class to send his team through into the semi-finals with a 2-0 victory.

Deulofeu's performance during the game fulfilled Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka's prophecy.

Spaniard Karanka worked with compatriot Deulofeu as a 14-year-old during his time as a national youth coach, and tipped him for the top all those years ago.

Unfortunately for him, he found himself on the receiving end of Deulofeu's brilliance at the Riverside on Tuesday evening as the midfielder opened the scoring with a stunning solo effort.

 

 

He then provided the ammunition for Romelu Lukaku to head the visitors into a 2-0 lead with just 28 minutes gone - and that is the way it finished - in front of a largely shell-shocked crowd of 31,628.

Stoke

Stoke eased into the semi-finals as goals from Ibrahim Afellay and substitute Phil Bardsley secured a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Afellay put the Potters ahead in the 30th minute, the summer signing registering his first goal for the club with a delightfully-executed volley.

Bardsley then smashed home a low effort from outside the box in the 75th minute - also opening his Potters goalscoring account - to seal what will be Stoke's first League Cup semi-final appearance since 1971-72, the year they raised the trophy.
