EPL to use vanishing spray for new season
The English Premier League has announced that the referees will be equipped with the vanishing spray seen at the World Cup.
The use of the spray to demarcate free-kicks and the defending walls during football's biggest tournament in Brazil was widely praised by fans, players and officials alike.
While the Premier League was reportedly reluctant to embrace the technology, which effectively curbed the problem of encroachment by defending players at set-pieces, it made the surprise announcement on its official Twitter feed just after midnight on Thursday (Singapore time).
Premier League chief excutive Richard Scudamore said: "It was clear from watching the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil that vanishing spray benefitted referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches.
"Following consultation with our clubs and the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), we have decided to introduce it in the Barclays Premier League and look forward to having it in place for the 2014/15 season."
