Football great Pele leaves hospital after surgery

Brazilian football legend Pele, 74, suffered a number of health scares in the last six months.

He was released from hospital yesterday (May 9) following prostate surgery, doctors said.

The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo released a picture of a smiling Pele wearing sportswear and waving at the camera with his partner, Marcia Cibele Aoki.

The 74-year-old was treated at the same facility last year for a severe urinary tract infection.

The only player to win three World Cup titles underwent surgery for an enlarged prostate – a common condition in aging men – four days ago.  The condition causes difficulty urinating.

Media reports said the surgery was aimed at preventing a repeat of the urinary infection that sent Pele to hospital last year.

A medical report indicated on Friday that there was no tumors.

The global sports icon underwent surgery for kidney stones in November, then came down with an infection.

His one remaining kidney – the other was removed following a rib injury during his playing days – stopped working and had to be treated with dialysis. - AFP
