Lion City Cup brings in Spurs, Liverpool
The popular Lion City Cup youth football tournament, which was not held last year, is back.
This year's tournament, the 26th edition, will see the Under-15 sides of English giants Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur invited to compete with Singapore's national Under-15 and Under-16 teams.
Ikhsan, the youngest son of local football legend Fandi Ahmad, will feature in the U-16 team.
The matches will take place at the Jalan Besar Stadium over two matchdays, on Aug 14 and 16.
The Lion City Cup was not held last year due to funding issues.
But, at the tournament draw at the Oasia Hotel on Friday morning, event organisers Red Card delivered assurances the tournament will be held for at least the next three years, until 2018.
Red Card also explained that only two foreign teams were invited for this year's tournament, as opposed to four from 2011 to 2013, because of "congestion of both sporting and non-sporting events" in the Singapore's golden jubilee year.
The tournament will be broadcast to over 100 countries.
