Mustafi blow for Germany

Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi will miss the rest of the World Cup after he tore muscle fibres in his left thigh during yesterday morning's (Singapore time) 2-1 win over Algeria.

The Sampdoria central defender was in the starting 11, deputising for Mats Hummels, who had the flu, but had to leave the field in the 70th minute of the match to be replaced by Sami Khedira.

Tests carried out yesterday confirmed the extent of his injury.

"He's not going to play any further part in this World Cup," said Germany coach Joachim Loew, who will now hope that Hummels recovers in time to face France on Friday.
