Paranormal activity: 'Islamic' medical expert blames spirits for Malaysia's 10-0 hammering

We've heard it all before when a team loses a football match – the ball, the pitch, the fans, the players, the coach, the weather.

Following Malaysia's 10-0 spanking at the hands of the UAE, a so-called "Islamic" medical expert has added a new excuse for football failure – the occult.

The stunning reason springs from a report in Malaysian tabloid Kosmo on Sunday (Sept 6), where they quoted Datuk Shamsuri Shafie's suggestion that "makhluk halus" – or paranormal beings  – could have caused the team's disastrous performance by distracting the players on the pitch after forgetting to recite their pre-match prayers.

He said: "As Muslims we are encouraged to recite prayers before doing any activities including playing football.

"People then will usually recite prayers before playing so they will be blessed and protected from being disturbed by these paranormal entities."

Unsurprisingly, Shamsuri's suggestion was rubbished by Datuk Ismail Yahya, an ex-Shahriah judge from Terengganu, who told The Malay Mail Online that the defeat had nothing with these paranormal beings.

The 10-0 defeat in Abu Dhabi, which was a World Cup qualifying match, was Malaysia's worst-ever defeat in international football.

Coach Dollah Salleh handed in his resignation in the aftermath, leading to the appointment of Ong Kim Swee as interim coach.
