Loki gets one of two right

Loki the hamster made a dream debut on predicting the winning horse at last night's $1 million KrisFlyer International Sprint over 1,200m in Race 9 at Kranji.

At the Post Position Draw ceremony last Thursday, Loki, the female hamster bought specially to predict the winners of the two International races, the other being the $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup over 2,000m, picked Hong Kong ace LUCKY NINE to win the KrisFlyer.

Indeed, it was spot-on. Lucky Nine completed a double in the International Group 1 feature with a convincing two-and-a-half length win.

But his SIA Cup prediction, Longines Singapore Gold Cup winner Tropaios, beat only one home in the field of 12 runners.

"Not bad, 50 per cent strike-rate from my hamster," said Singapore Turf Club vice-president (corporate services) Simon Leong, who bought the hamster just a day earlier.

"It had only one day of training. Now it is in my home. We may use it again, since it is so good," added Leong, with a cheeky grin.

The last two years, the turf club used parrots to do the prediction.
