Military Attack hard to beat again in SIA cup
With a well-mapped preparation by his trainer John Moore, MILITARY ATTACK is poised to retain his crown in tonight's $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup over 2,000m in Race 10 at Kranji.
After several fair efforts following his International Group 1 victory in Singapore last May, Moore had Military Attack bouncing back into the winner's circle on Feb 23.
His Horse of the Year triumphed in the domestic Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup over 2,000m with tonight's jockey, Magic Man Joao Moreira, astride.
Military Attack had won the SIA Cup with Hong Kong's leading rider Zac Purton aboard.
Purton will be on Singapore hope TROPAIOS.
After a dismal performance in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup on March 29, which can be forgiven because the six-year-old raced on the dirt track, Military Attack served warning of his second Singapore visit with a narrow second in his final lead-up race, the Group 1 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup, also over 2,000m, on April 27.
The horse is now spot-on. Banzai!
1 MILITARY ATTACK (barrier 10)
Jockey: J Moreira Trainer: John Moore Owner: Canny Leung Chi Shan Career Starts: 29: 11-4-2 (S$6,396,470) Comments: The reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year will have plenty of admirers and will start as the hot favourite. After all, the sixyear- old will be guided by the man who knows the Kranji track at the back of his hand, four-time Singapore champion Joao Moreira.
2 DAN EXCEL (1)
Jockey: T Berry Trainer: John Moore Owner: David Philip Boehm Career: 35: 5-10-3 (S$4,043,859) Comments: Also trained by John Moore, the six-year-old led and then finished second to Military Attack by 3.25 lengths last year. He has the luck of the draw again with the same pole position and will likely play rabbit. His consistency will see him in the firing line.
3 TOKEI HALO (9)
Jockey: H Shii Trainer: Hisashi Shimizu Owner: Nobuhiko Kimura Career: 21: 8-2-2 (S$4,430,347) Comments: He led but petered out to finish a 15.25-length seventh in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free over 1,800m. You can excuse that run. If he can reproduce his run in the G1 Hong Kong Cup last December, when he beat all but HK’s Akeed Mofeed, he is a force to reckon with.
4 JOHNNY GUITAR (6)
Jockey: B Vorster Trainer: Patrick Shaw Owner: Crabbia Alfredo Leonardo Arnaldo Career: 20: 6-5-4 (S$450,733) Comments: He won four races in Argentina, including the G1 Estrellas Mile. He has had five starts at Kranji for two wins (over 1,400m and 1,600m, which was the G3 Polytrack Mile Championship). His last-start fast second in the 2,000m QE II Cup puts him in good stead.
5 SIDE GLANCE (7)
Jockey: J Spencer Trainer: Andrew Balding Owner: Pearl Bloodstock Ltd Career: 33: 8-4-7 (S$2,995,938) Comments: A globe-trotter, having raced in several countries. This English raider captured the G1 MacKinnon Stakes over 2,000m at Flemington in Melbourne four starts back. Last start, he finished fourth in the G1 Dubai World Cup over 2,000m. Fit and can win.
6 MULL OF KILLOUGH (3)
Jockey: D Oliver Trainer: Jane Chapple-Hyam Owner: Invictus Career: 33: 9-5-4 (S$658,610) Comments: Another who has travelled extensively, he ran fifth to Military Attack last year, beaten by 5 lengths. After his 12th placing in the G1 Godolphin Mile, he returned to Newmarket, England, and won the G3 Earl of Sefton Stakes over 1,800m last start. The dark horse.
7 SMOKING SUN (11)
Jockey: S Pasquier Trainer: Pascal Bary Owner: Niarchos Family Career: 13: 5-2-2 (S$406,756) Comments: The five-year-old comes with good recent form. Before his last-start fourth to the highly-rated Cirrus Des Aigles in the G1 Prix Ganay over 2,000m, he scored two in a row, including a G2 over 2,000m. His trainer won this race with Gloria De Campeao in 2009.
8 LIMARIO (12)
Jockey: P Dobbs Trainer: Doug Watson Owner: Bukhtoyarov Valentin & Kappushev Evgeny Career: 11: 3-1-1 (S$234,860) Comments: The four-year-old last ran in the G2 Godolphin Mile and finished a 2.5-length sixth. He won three starts earlier in G3 over 2,000m in Germany. He has settled quite well at Kranji but he probably needs some luck and improvement to worry the top guns.
9 WILD GEESE (2)
Jockey: Apprentice K A’Isisuhairi Trainer: Steven Burridge Owner: Hippocrates Stable Career: 25: 5-3-5 (S$722,091) Comments: His black-type moment finally came last start when he led all the way to capture the G2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2,000m. He is as fit as can be and has drawn favourably in Gate 2, and will certainly give Kranji racegoers plenty to shout about.
10 CITY LAD (8)
Jockey: KB Soo Trainer: Desmond Koh Owner: KT Stable Career: 34: 5-9-1 (S$544,113) Comments: A supplementary entry, the five-year-old was a gallant second to Cash Luck in the G1 Kranji Mile last October. He finished fourth in the recent G3 JBBA Moonbeam Vase over 1,800m and the G2 QE II Cup over 2,000m. He will need plenty of luck to win it.
11 TROPAIOS (5)
Jockey: Z Purton Trainer: Michael Freedman Owner: China Horse Club Stable Career: 20: 6-2-6 (S$1,118,538) Comments: He scored four times in France and had his crowning moment in Singapore with his spectacular last-to-first win in the G1 Longines Singapore Gold Cup over 2,200m last November. He was surprisingly dismal in the G2 QE II Cup. But don’t rule him out yet.
12 SI SAGE (4)
Jockey: D Flores Trainer: Darrell Vienna Owner: Red Baron’s Barn LLC, Rancho Temescal & Vayaconsuerte LLC Career: 17: 3-6-2 (S$212,008) Comments: The four-year-old was the first foreign contender to arrive to acclimatise. He looked bright and sprightly at work but tradition is against him — no American horse has won either the SIA Cup or KrisFlyer. But there have been not many American enteries for both races
