MR BEAN GETS SERIOUS

Watch Rowan Atkinson in his role as TV character Mr Bean and, almost always, you'll end up smiling.

Well, MR BEAN the racehorse would have had that same effect on its connections after he turned in an Emmy-winning workout at Kranji yesterday morning.

Taken out by jockey Lisa Allpress, who will be on the reins on Sunday, Mr Bean the horse turned on the style to run the mandatory 600m in 36.7sec.

The six-year-old has been a serious campaigner, with 57 runs since his first Kranji appearance in October 2010.

To his credit, he has not been a scrounger and has paid for his feed with cheques from five wins, five seconds, four thirds and five fourths. In total he has cashed in over $160,000.

Indeed, it was just last month that his owners, Remarkable Stables, banked in another cheque when their galloper finished second to Fountain in a 1,200m race on the Polytrack.

However, it was 13 months ago that he last trotted into the winners' circle. That day, when ridden by R Shafiq, Mr Bean sat in the box seat and made his move at the 150m mark. He eventually won that 1,400m race by a comfortable three lengths.

Under the care of trainer Mark Walker since December 2010, the son of Handsome Ransom goes over that same distance in Race 8 on Sunday and, having drawn the advantageous No. 2 gate, jockey Allpress should be able to give him every chance.

Yes, if things turn out right and he runs true to the form he showed on the training track yesterday, come Sunday, Mr Bean should have punters smiling all the way to the bank.
