Blow by blow

The hosts are wobbling and Croatia have scored! Ivica Olic slips a low cross into the box that evades Thiago Silva and finds Nikica Jelavic. The Hull City striker scuffs his shot, but it bounces in off Marcelo. All of a sudden, this Sao Paulo crowd has gone ever so quiet!

The first yellow card of the tournament, but should it have been more? Neymar catches Luka Modric in the face with his arm and Croatia are furious! They’re demanding a red, but it’s only a yellow. That would have been a disaster for Brazil.

How often does that happen? Two minutes after narrowly avoiding an early bath, Neymar finds spaces, squeezes off a low, skimming shot and it bounces in off Stipe Pletikosa’s post! 1-1.

More controversy! Fred tumbles to the ground next to Dejan Lovren and the referee gives a penalty. And that’s no penalty. Fred went down so easily, you can understand why the Croats are so angry. Neymar steps up, Pletikosa gets a hand to it, but it creeps in. 2-1.

Referee Yuichi Nishimura is not having a good night. Olic challenges Julio Cesar for a ball and is penalised for barely any contact. Croatia stab the ball into the net, but it won’t stand.

That’s it! Oscar fires home from long range, Pletikosa should have done far better, but it’s too late now. Brazil win 3-1, but there will be questions asked of this referee. Not a vintage performance.
