Southampton’s incredible start to the season continued against Stoke City at St Mary’s as Sadio Mane’s goal propelled them back to second place in the Premier League.

It was never going to be a repeat of the 8-0 annihilation dished out to Sunderland last week, but another fine team display saw Saints celebrating a fourth consecutive home win.

Mane’s first-half goal proved the difference as Stoke were seen off, making this a better start than the 1983-84 season when Southampton finished the campaign second. Had it not been for poor finishing, Ronald Koeman’s men would have won by a much bigger margin.

Stoke struggled to contain the attacking threesome of Mane, Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic, with Tadic setting Morgan Schneiderlin up to rattle the crossbar
