Popes will not watch World Cup final together: Vatican
As the world waits to find out if Germany or Argentina will win the World Cup, another question is being asked.
Will Pope Francis, an Argentine, sit down and catch the final with his German predecessor, Benedict XVI?
Sadly, it seems the answer will be no, according to the Vatican.
While Holy See spokesman Father Federico Lombardi has confirmed that football-crazy Francis "might want to watch the final", a Vatican source has "excluded categorically" the possibility of pope emeritus Benedict joining him.
Speaking to AFP, the source said: "It's really not his thing, he is not a fan. It would be like inflicting an infinite penitence on him at the age of 87.
"He has never been able to watch a football match from beginning to end in his life."
That hasn't stopped the Internet, however.
Aside from a #holywar hashtag appearing on Twitter, the meme brigade has been in full flux.
