Red is the colour! Shirt sales show United is more popular in Manchester

Are Manchester City the best supported club among locals in Manchester?

City fans have long claimed that their team are the club of choice for Mancunians while local rivals Manchester United are largely supported by glory hunters from beyond the city.

But research conducted by the UK’s largest sporting retailer, Sports Direct, could just debunk that notion.

According to their survey, a whopping 94.57 per cent of shirt sales in Manchester are Red Devils replica kits.

Another intriguing nugget unearthed by the survey is that Chelsea seem to be well-supported in Lagos, Nigeria.

The African city accounts for 8.43 per cent of all Blues jerseys sold by Sports Direct — which was founded by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley.

Only in London does the company sell more Chelsea kits.

Clearly, Chelsea’s Nigerian midfielder Jon Obi Mikel has quite the sway over his compatriots.
