Wayne Rooney is England's new captain

No surprises here, England's new captain is Wayne Rooney.

Manager Roy Hodgson made the official announcement on Thursday.

The appointment of the Manchester United forward was pretty much expected following the departure of senior players Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

The 28-year-old who has 95 caps told his official website: "To be named as the England captain is a dream come true for me personally and of course for my family. It is something I will take massive pride in doing."

Wayne Rooney will join the team once visa formalities are finalised.
