Mixed day for Feng

It was a mixed day for Singapore's top women's table tennis player, Feng Tianwei, at the ITTF World Tour German Open (Super) in Berlin yesterday.

In the women's doubles, Feng and Lin Ye lost 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6) to Germany's Han Ying and Irene Ivancan in the Round of 16.

Compatriots Yu Mengyu and Zhou Yihan were also unable to make it through to the quarter-finals, going down 3-2 (5-11, 11-13, 11-8, 14-12, 11-9) to Taiwanese pair Cheng I-ching and Huang Yi-hua.

Feng, 29, had more luck in the women's singles.

The world No. 8 clinched a 4-1 (11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8) win over Hitomi Sato to advance to the Round of 16, where she meets Hong Kong's Lee Ho Ching today.

BUILD-UP

Feng has an important few months ahead as she builds to the Olympic Games in Rio in August.

She was a crucial figure in the Singapore women's squad that won team silver at the 2008 Olympics and team bronze four years later in London, where she also picked up a women's singles bronze.

Due to a mixture of injuries and poor form, Feng has failed to hit the heights over the last 18 months and she will be hoping 2016 will see a turnaround in her fortunes.
