Soh fast: Soh Rui Yong claims marathon gold
Singapore's Soh Rui Yong claimed the gold medal in the men's marathon at the 28th SEA Games this morning, clocking a time of 2:34.56.
The time was hardly the most impressive -- his personal best is almost nine minutes quicker -- but the manner in which he won the race was.
Towards the end of the gruelling 42km run in wet conditions, Soh found himself neck and neck with Thai runner Sirisung Boonthong.
But the Singaporean managed to pull off a devastating kick in the final 250 metres to pull away ahead of his rival and win comfortably.
The victory is Singapore's second consecutive marathon triumph, following Mok Ying Ren's historic first triumph in Myanmar in Dec 2013.
