Weightlifter charged with sexual assault at Commonwealth Games

A Papua New Guinea weightlifter who competed at the ongoing Commonwealth Games has been charged over an alleged sexual assault at a supermarket in Glasgow.

Toua Udia, 22, pleaded not guilty and will go on trial Friday at the Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He was arrested after police received a report of an incident last Monday at a supermarket near the athletes' village.

Udia competed the weekend after the alleged assault.

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper said the criminal case did not impact on Udia's ability to compete "because there was no condition placed upon him."

Hooper also added that "there is a presumption of innocence which we all enjoy."
