2012/13 Week #18 Winner: Wong Chek Poh

2012 marks a full year my elderly mum was confined to her wheelchair. It does not help that dementia is setting in, affecting her memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. As a family, we have to juggle work and personal lives to ensure mum is comfortable and well-taken care of. It is not easy, but she is our mum. We love you, Mum.

2012 saw the birth of our first baby girl. The experience of taking care the little one has made us appreciate the love shown by our parents all these years.

I feel that this photo shows that no matter how much resistance the younger generation is against the care and concern shown by the older generation, our elders will never give up showering their love for us.

As 2012 comes to an end, I decided to photograph some of the festive spirit. I was walking along Tanglin Mall, when I saw children having fun playing with the bubble "snow". While the older children were able to enjoy the event, the younger ones seemed to be missing out. Just then, what looked to me like a father picked his son up to enjoy the falling "snow". What inspired me was the bond between father and son, and the father's effort to help his son enjoy like the rest of the children. It was sweet and joyous.

Knowing that the colourful Rochor Centre will be demolished to make way for the construction of the North-South Expressway, I revisited it as I was nearby at Little India.

The colours, lines and shapes attracted me to stay put at my vantage point for some photography. This was taken from the 4th floor (void deck level of the residents).

2012/13 Week #12 Winner: Feng Yikang

I thought this scene was touching in a simple way: it was a morning in Chinatown and the young boy was leading in a natural, confident stride, one hand holding the slouching grandma's hand, the other carrying a bag of food. Today, I don't see alot of kids doing this anymore (myself neither). It also felt symbolic: the young boy of our future, and the grandma, of all the stories of toil and sacrifice of the previous generation.

My message to tomorrow's generation: Wherever you are, whatever you be; remember the pair of hands that holds you tight and safe, the pair of hands that feeds you when you are hungry, the pair of hands that pulls you back when you missed a step, the pair of hands that will always be there for you.
